VISION 2025: Open and Software-Independent BIMS in Use at All Phases of Infrastructure Processes

BuildingSMART Finland puts into practice and exports the results of InfraBIM R&D which has a long history in Finland. One result of the bSF Infrastructure Business Group’s strategy development is the INFRA 2025 vision, which stresses the importance and benefits of digitizing all infrastructure processes.

The BuildingSMART Finland Infrastructure Business Group includes about fifty infrastructure sector organizations, and about a hundred people take part in the activities of various work groups. In its first year of operation, the Business Group focused particularly on strategy formation which, among other things, gave birth to the INFRA 2025 Vision encompassing both physical infrastructure and information.

The goal is to have fully digitized infrastructure design and production processes by 2025. That creates preconditions for considerable improvement of productivity and competitiveness not only in the infrastructure sector but also the rest of the Finnish economy.

”In connection with the strategy development, we specified the focuses of operation for 2015: the publication of the modeling requirements and the updating of the Inframodel Data Exchange Format and the InfraBIM Classification System. One of the main tasks for this year is also getting the various owners of the infrastructure network involved in the operation,” emphasizes Juha Liukas of Sito Oy, the Chairman of the bSF Infrastructure Business Group.

Creating an advantage in international standardization

”We are also preparing a roadmap for 2016–2025. We are closely monitoring world events and actively involved in international development and standardization work. The Inframodel Data Exchange Format developed in Finland has attracted widespread interest,” Liukas continues.

According to Liukas, the playing field of standardization is complex from the point of view of infrastructure sector data exchange. LandXML was originally adopted because it is the only format that allows exchanging infrastructure data properly with attributes. The Inframodel is the practical solution for the use of the LandXML format in Finland. The 3.1 version of the Inframodel to be published in March 2015 will cover, for example, district heating networks, wiring and cable data, stabilization and piling.

The IFC (Industry Foundation Classes), in turn, is an international standard for the building construction sector which has been successfully applied to bridge design. It is probable that in the future IFC will also support data exchange related to other types of infrastructure better than in the past. An active player in GIS, again, is OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium), which is getting increasingly interested in the infrastructure sector. The French have their own IFC Bridge project and the Koreans have the IFC Road.

”We should not just wait to see what happens in the international playing fields but must continue to play an active role in the Inframodel development and publicize our experiences from it and the results of the development in international arenas. Thereby we can best influence the format in which infrastructure information soon flows across the world,” Liukas suggests.
